The midguard serpent, Jormungand encircles the Sunwheel, one of the oldest and most sacred symbols known to mankind. Sunwheels feature on rock carving and jewellery throughout the Norse world to mark the importance of the sun in agriculture and also to mark its traditional link with the precious sun-coloured metal – gold.
